About Me

To give you a little different picture of me than the standard intro text provides:

I love libraries, my dog, the farm, Tuesdays, orchestral music, heat, my flute, having mastery of the piano as I play, photography. I love the New York Times on all days, but particularly on Tuesdays because they print the "Science Times." I love people. I love to people watch. I love NPR. I love "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" and "This American Life."

I love learning, but not always the confines of school. I love the farm and cities, each in its own right. I love being connected to the earth and experiencing the feeling that I am but a tiny blip in this vast world. I love truly appreciating that insignificance of my life and realizing that I can really only affect the world by changing myself and knowing that even though it may seem insignificant, if it's my full effort, it's worth it. I love to "see" what people are saying and not just "hear" it.

I work every day at simply loving life.

Prevention is my passion.

I truly believe everyone deserves the have knowledge and resources to best care for their health and avoid disease. Hence, I came into public health. More specifically, community and behavioral health. Every day I am astounded by how well this degree fits me and that classes I am taking are exactly what I want.

I am passionate about public health and I hope this blog shares some of that excitement with you, whether you have never heard of the field or have been working in it for years.

And to give you a little peek at my life...

My dog Zephyr (pronounced Ze-fear....long story) is a huge part of my life. He's 1 1/2 years old and soon I'm planning to make time to get his certified as a therapy dog. The University of Iowa Hospital requires dogs to be at least 2....so I should get on that pretty soon here. I tried very hard to get his ears to properly tip when he was a pup, but they refused to cooperate.

I have been a goof in pictures my whole life.

Matt, my boyfriend. What to say about him? He rocks. We have the same birthday (a year apart). We have the same undergraduate major (music/premed). Are families are mirror images (I am the middle child of three and the only girl, he is the middle child of three and the only boy). For a couple years we had private lessons at the same time.

I have some of the greatest friends in the world. I have known some since I was only months old, others were added in elementary school, and a few others joined us in high school. They rock.
